Doherty: We deserve our position in the table
Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Matt Doherty has hit back at claims made by Newcastle United’s Isaac Hayden.
The Daily Mirror report that Hayden made some negative remarks towards the Molineux club after Willy Boly’s 95th-minute strike denied Newcastle all three points on Monday night.
The ex-Arsenal man claimed he was ‘struggling to see how Wolves are 7th’, given the fact that both games between the two teams this season have gone down to the wire.
Doherty himself bagged a stoppage-time winner in December’s reverse fixture, one of three occasions had found the back of the net in the league this term.
In reply to Hayden, the 27-year-old said:
We’re there for a reason and I think we deserve to be there. We play some nice stuff and have been getting some good results, and when it’s like that you can’t wait for the next league game. It was so important that we didn’t lose the Newcastle game. You never want to lose a match, especially at home and especially with the kind of form we’ve been in lately. Even when time was running out, I always thought we were going to get one more chance and score. It obviously doesn’t always happen like that, but that’s the way things are going for us at the moment, and it always feels a bit better when you score late on like that.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s men’s league standing is even more impressive given the fact they were playing in the Championship last season.
They will resume their league campaign at AFC Bournemouth on February 23rd.
