Wolverhampton Wanderers ‘fancy their chances’ of winning the FA Cup this season, according to defender Matt Doherty.
The Express and Star write that Doherty played a key role in Wolves’ progression to the fifth round, scoring twice in Tuesday’s 3-2 replay win over Shrewsbury Town at Molineux.
The 27-year-old ensured the tie went to a replay in the first place, scoring a 93rd-minute leveller in the original fixture.
Doherty has established himself as one of Wolves’ key performers this season, impressing with his defensive and attacking capabilities in the right wing-back role.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s men are 7th in the Premier League table with 13 matches to play, and the Republic of Ireland international believes they can use that confidence to help them lift silverware in May.
We fancy our chances. Considering we are seventh in the league now and there are not many Premier League teams left we have got to look at it and back ourselves to go and win a trophy. If we beat Bristol now we are not far away from Wembley. It will be one more round after that. So it has opened up for us – if we can play well and get into the later rounds who knows what can happen. It is important to us.
Wolves face Bristol City at Ashton Gate in the next round of the competition, with the match taking place next Sunday.
