Nuno: We controlled the game and were the better team
Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Nuno Espirito Santo claims his side were the better team as they exited the Carabao Cup against Leicester City.
The Birmingham Mail report that Nuno was happy with his players’ performances despite eventually losing 3-1 on penalties to the Foxes.
The team bared little resemblance to the one that takes to the field in the Premier League, with just Jonny and Conor Coady retaining their places from Saturday’s draw with Manchester United.
Both teams were unable to break the deadlock in the 90 minutes, leading to the shootout which saw Wolves’ cup run come to an end.
On his team’s performance, the 44-year-old said:
It was a good game, very intense and like you say, it was a close game. Leicester started strong and we needed to get into our shape, but afterwards, I think we controlled the game. In the second half, we were the better team with more chances and we tried to avoid the penalties.
It doesn’t matter what competition, we wanted to win. I’m sad because we didn’t win but proud of the way the players worked. Today was evidence that we have a good squad. The most important thing is the way the boys wait for the chance.
It seems unlikely that any of the players involved last night will have worked their way into Premier League contention, as Wolves’ strong start to the season means Nuno is cautious to rotate too heavily.
